SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, March 10\, with Larry Howard of Maple Valley Farm
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILReviving the Indiana Food Freedom Act and Building a National Patronage Network for Regenerative Agriculture \nThe future of America’s food system hinges on our ability to empower small farmers and defend the right of consumers to choose what they eat. Larry’s presentation will explore two revolutionary initiatives aimed at transforming the way we grow\, distribute\, and access food. \nFirst\, we’ll revisit the Indiana Food Freedom Act\, a visionary piece of legislation that would protect Hoosiers’ right to obtain and contract for food without unnecessary government oversight. This law represents a bold stand against regulatory overreach\, ensuring that farmers and consumers can engage in direct\, informed transactions based on trust and transparency. \nNext\, Larry will introduce the Thriving Farms Initiative\, a national effort to build a patronage network that directly supports regenerative farms. By providing cash gifts to farmers and their families\, this initiative aims to catalyze the rapid growth of local\, sustainable food systems. This bold approach not only accelerates the adoption of regenerative practices but also creates a model for community-supported agriculture that can be replicated nationwide. \nAbout Larry Howard: \nLarry Howard is a husband\, homeschool dad\, and lifelong advocate for food freedom and regenerative agriculture. With over 20 years of experience as a regenerative livestock farmer at Maple Valley Farm in Bloomington\, Indiana he and his family raise cattle\, sheep\, pigs\, meat chickens\, laying hens\, turkeys\, and ducks\, fostering a model of farming that prioritizes animal welfare\, environmental stewardship\, and sustainable food systems. \nLarry has been a Weston A. Price chapter leader since 2005\, advocating for raw milk and traditional foods\, and has testified before legislators and debated with policymakers to protect Hoosiers’ right to access the foods of their choice. He drafted the Indiana Food Freedom Act\, groundbreaking legislation to ensure informed individuals can freely contract with farmers and food producers without burdensome government regulation. \nIn 2012\, he founded an innovative private ownership-based partnership that revitalized his family farm’s operations. His efforts have been highlighted in emergency trips to the statehouse with his children—who have written speeches en route—and in presentations to organizations like the Indiana Environmental Health Association. \nToday\, he is spearheading the Thriving Farms Initiative\, a national patronage network designed to provide direct financial support to regenerative farms\, fueling a grassroots revival of sustainable agriculture and food freedom across the country. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. For over 30 years\, Lennie’s has been bringing people together over delicious food and drink in a setting perfect for meaningful conversation. \nLocation & Parking\nLennie’s is located at 514 E. Kirkwood Ave in the heart of downtown Bloomington\, Indiana. Street parking is available along Kirkwood Avenue and surrounding streets (metered until 9pm). There are several parking garages within walking distance. \nTicket Information\n$50 per person includes a tasty buffet dinner and drinks.  Space is limited so secure your spot now! \nTravel Information\nAccommodations\nExcellent hotels within walking distance of Lennie’s: \n\nGrant Street Inn – A historic charming local inn\nGraduate Bloomington – A boutique hotel celebrating Indiana University’s heritage\n\nFor more information contact Joni McGary at jonimcgary@me.com. SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club April 14 with Dr. Steven Templeton
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILWe are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on April 14\, 2025\, featuring Dr. Steven Templeton\, author of “Fear of a Microbial Planet: How a Germophobic Safety Culture Makes Us Less Safe.” \nAbout Dr. Templeton: \nDr. Templeton is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine – Terre Haute. His research focuses on immune responses to opportunistic fungal pathogens. He has also served on Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Public Health Integrity Committee and was a co-author of “Questions for a COVID-19 commission\,” a document provided to members of a pandemic response-focused congressional committee. \nAbout the talk: \nIn his talk\, Dr. Templeton will examine how the Covid-19 response exemplified our culture’s excessive fear of microbes\, resulting in counterproductive policies that may have caused more harm than good. He will discuss how the pandemic amplified existing germophobic tendencies in society\, leading to interventions that disrupted the natural relationship between our immune systems and the microbial world. Dr. Templeton will offer insights into how we can develop more balanced and effective approaches to public health challenges without the devastating social\, economic\, and psychological costs of germaphobia-driven overreach. \nJoin us for an evening of stimulating conversation\, delicious food\, and community connection as we explore these vital ideas together. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. SUMMARY:Brownstone Supper Club\, May 21\, 2025: David Zweig
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILThe famed supper club at a fabulous venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of the Brownstone Institute\, featuring reporter and famed author David Zweig\, whose bestselling book is An Abundance of Caution\, on school closures but also the hellscape of the whole Covid period.\n.\nCome early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are deeply honored to host David Zweig\, a curious and scrupulous journalist whose book is an amazing documentary history of our times. Sweeping and precise\, the author is one of the few brave journalists in the country actually to attend the Great Barrington Declaration event…in person! \nHe has worked on this book for five years\, interviewing countless scientists\, writers\, anonymous bureaucrats\, and publishers\, all with the driving purpose of trying to figure out what the heck happened to cause this disaster. All the while\, he maintained an emotional distance that only a spirit of incredulity grants. The result is spectacular\, a page turner that deals with a deeply painful topic but somehow ends up providing an emotional release. \nThe early reviews have been over the top\, almost as if the country had been waiting for such a book. We are thrilled to hear from him and hear his story of the research and writing\, and have him engage with our wonderful community on the meaning of it all.

SUMMARY:Brownstone Greater Boston Supper Club\, August 5\, 2025: Thomas Harrington
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILPlease join Brownstone Institute friends and supporters for an evening of lively conversation\, intriguing speakers\, and fun! This month we are pleased to welcome Thomas Harrington. \nAbout Thomas Harrington\nThomas Harrington is Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College in Hartford\, Connecticut. His academic research focuses on Iberian national identity movements\, intra-Iberian cultural relations\, theories of culture and Iberian migrations to the Americas. He is a three-time Fulbright Senior Scholar (Spain\, Uruguay and Italy) as well as the author of numerous articles and five books\, the latest being The Treason of the Experts: Covid and the Credentialed Class (2023). Many of his articles and a sample of his photography can be found at Words in The Pursuit of Light. He is a Senior Brownstone Scholar\, a Brownstone Fellow\, and a founding member of Brownstone Spain. \nAbout the Talk:\nWhile the power of the modern sciences rests heavily on its practitioners’ ability to analyze the constituent parts of complex physical phenomena\, the power of the humanities has traditionally lain in its ability to synthesize broad schemas meaning from disparate elements of the cultures that surround us. However\, as sciences began to generate significant advances and gain great social prestige in the late 19th century\, practitioners of the humanities lost faith in their essential synthesizing mission and began to ape the  analytical approach of scientists. The result has been disastrous for the humanities and our culture as it has left us largely unable to tackle complex social problems\, such as those attendant to public health\, with a minimum of  tact\, humility and historical perspective. \nVenue\nTremezzo is a friendly\, relaxed Italian eatery. Driven by a passion to end unnecessary suffering\, she speaks boldly yet compassionately on some of the toughest issues in healthcare and public policy. \nRecent projects include initiatives to help healthcare professionals heal from moral injury\, Education on the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System\, and co-hosting the globally ranked podcast Nurses Out Loud—a daily\, uncensored show from the America Out Loud Network. \nAshley’s mission is to awaken\, equip\, and advocate—restoring integrity to healthcare\, defending medical liberty\, and ending needless suffering by empowering others to reclaim their health\, their voice\, and their God-given right to informed decision-making. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. SUMMARY:Brownstone Supper Club\, West Hartford\, August 20\, 2025: John Hart
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILSupper Club\, West Hartford\, August 20\, 2025 \nThe famed supper club at a fabulous venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of Brownstone Institute\, featuring Open the Books president John Hart. This organization has been on the front lines for fiscal transparency in government. It was first to explore Anthony Fauci’s salary of $480\,654\, the biggest in the federal workforce! \nCome early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are deeply honored to host John Hart\, an experienced investigator of government who has been on the front lines with one central question: where is the money going? His organization Open the Books has developed vast databases of documentation that have helped reformers get a handle on waste\, abuse\, and fraud in government. He knows the system as well as any living person. \nJohn will share with us insights on what it is like to be in his position as a voice of fiscal sanity while working with DOGE in DC\, and what he has learned over the last several years in his role. We are thrilled to hear from him and hear his story of his experiences and what it has taught him about this highly contentious moment in public life.
