DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILWe are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on April 14\, 2025\, featuring Dr. Steven Templeton\, author of “Fear of a Microbial Planet: How a Germophobic Safety Culture Makes Us Less Safe.” \nAbout Dr. Templeton: \nDr. Templeton is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine – Terre Haute. His research focuses on immune responses to opportunistic fungal pathogens. He has also served on Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Public Health Integrity Committee and was a co-author of “Questions for a COVID-19 commission\,” a document provided to members of a pandemic response-focused congressional committee. \nAbout the talk: \nIn his talk\, Dr. Templeton will examine how the Covid-19 response exemplified our culture’s excessive fear of microbes\, resulting in counterproductive policies that may have caused more harm than good. He will discuss how the pandemic amplified existing germophobic tendencies in society\, leading to interventions that disrupted the natural relationship between our immune systems and the microbial world. Dr. Templeton will offer insights into how we can develop more balanced and effective approaches to public health challenges without the devastating social\, economic\, and psychological costs of germaphobia-driven overreach. \nJoin us for an evening of stimulating conversation\, delicious food\, and community connection as we explore these vital ideas together. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. The food is wonderful and the discussion brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are excited to host Laura\, whose books and many media appearances have fired up a much-needed debate about psychiatric drugs and the claims surrounding them. Her intensely biographical story is a real-life example of what research is showing: these drugs themselves can become worse than the problem they are supposed to solve. \nHer book has been reviewed sometimes favorably and sometimes savagely. Regardless\, it is suddenly at the center of an issue that afflicts one in four adults and many teens.

SUMMARY:Brownstone Supper Club\, May 21\, 2025: David Zweig
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILThe famed supper club at a fabulous venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of the Brownstone Institute\, featuring reporter and famed author David Zweig\, whose bestselling book is An Abundance of Caution\, on school closures but also the hellscape of the whole Covid period.\n.\nCome early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are deeply honored to host David Zweig\, a curious and scrupulous journalist whose book is an amazing documentary history of our times. Sweeping and precise\, the author is one of the few brave journalists in the country actually to attend the Great Barrington Declaration event…in person! \nHe has worked on this book for five years\, interviewing countless scientists\, writers\, anonymous bureaucrats\, and publishers\, all with the driving purpose of trying to figure out what the heck happened to cause this disaster. All the while\, he maintained an emotional distance that only a spirit of incredulity grants. The result is spectacular\, a page turner that deals with a deeply painful topic but somehow ends up providing an emotional release. \nThe early reviews have been over the top\, almost as if the country had been waiting for such a book. We are thrilled to hear from him and hear his story of the research and writing\, and have him engage with our wonderful community on the meaning of it all.

SUMMARY:Brownstone Greater Boston Supper Club\, August 5\, 2025: Thomas Harrington
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILPlease join Brownstone Institute friends and supporters for an evening of lively conversation\, intriguing speakers\, and fun! This month we are pleased to welcome Thomas Harrington. \nAbout Thomas Harrington\nThomas Harrington is Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College in Hartford\, Connecticut. His academic research focuses on Iberian national identity movements\, intra-Iberian cultural relations\, theories of culture and Iberian migrations to the Americas. He is a three-time Fulbright Senior Scholar (Spain\, Uruguay and Italy) as well as the author of numerous articles and five books\, the latest being The Treason of the Experts: Covid and the Credentialed Class (2023). Many of his articles and a sample of his photography can be found at Words in The Pursuit of Light. He is a Senior Brownstone Scholar\, a Brownstone Fellow\, and a founding member of Brownstone Spain. \nAbout the Talk:\nWhile the power of the modern sciences rests heavily on its practitioners’ ability to analyze the constituent parts of complex physical phenomena\, the power of the humanities has traditionally lain in its ability to synthesize broad schemas meaning from disparate elements of the cultures that surround us. However\, as sciences began to generate significant advances and gain great social prestige in the late 19th century\, practitioners of the humanities lost faith in their essential synthesizing mission and began to ape the  analytical approach of scientists. The result has been disastrous for the humanities and our culture as it has left us largely unable to tackle complex social problems\, such as those attendant to public health\, with a minimum of  tact\, humility and historical perspective. \nVenue\nTremezzo is a friendly\, relaxed Italian eatery. We’ll enjoy appetizers\,  lasagna\, all you can eat Neapolitan brick oven pizza\, including vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free (cauliflower crust) options\, salad and wine. \nLocation & Parking\n2 Lowell St\, Wilmington\, MA 01887. SUMMARY:Brownstone Supper Club\, West Hartford\, September 24\, 2025: Retsef Levi
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILThe famed supper club at a fabulous venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of the Brownstone Institute\, features MIT scientist and biostatistician Dr. Retsef Levi\, who is a leading authority on information systems\, pharmaceutical efficacy and safety\, and a current member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. \nCome early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion is brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are deeply honored to host Retsef Levi\, a curious and scrupulous scientist with a humane outlook on solutions in these troubled times. He is a member of the Operations Management Group at MIT Sloan and affiliated with the MIT Operations Research Center. Levi also serves as the faculty leader for Food Chain Supply Analytics. Before coming to MIT\, he spent a year in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center as the holder of the Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Tel-Aviv University in 2001\, and a PhD in Operations Research from Cornell University in 2005. \nHe is a member of ACIP\, the committee that provides advice and guidance to leaders of the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This CIP appointment is for four years. \nRetsef will share with us insights on the matter of AI systems. Are they as robust as advertised or are we merely creating single points of failure. Not nearly enough attention has been paid to this concern. Another matter: when AI systems break down\, can anyone fix them? Other issues will come up in Q&A. \nWe are thrilled to hear from him and hear his story of his experiences and what it has taught him about this highly contentious moment in public life. This event will certainly sell out\, so be sure to get your tickets early.

SUMMARY:Brownstone Greater Boston Supper Club\, October 7\, 2025: Kevin McKernan & Jessica Rose
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILRocco’s Restaurant and Bar\, 193 Main Street\, Wilmington\, MA \nTuesday\, October 7\,\n5:30pm – 9:00pm\nWilmington\, MA\n$50 \nPlease join us for an evening of lively conversation\, intriguing speakers\, and fun! This month we are pleased to welcome Kevin McKernan and Jessica Rose. \nAbout Kevin McKernan\nKevin worked as the Team Leader for R&D on the human genome project at MIT with the hopes of delivering personalized medicine. After founding several genomics startups to democratize DNA sequencing\, he found himself increasingly haunted by his colleagues’ departure from personalized medicine in favor of herd top down herd medicine. He has since focused his efforts on open sourcing medicinal genomes like Cannabis sativa and Psilocybe cubensis to enable a better understanding of safer alternatives to the top down dissemination of dangerous FDA approved drugs. \nAbout Jessica Rose\nJessica Rose\, Brownstone Fellow; IMA Senior Fellow; Surfer\, is a Canadian researcher with 5 post-secondary degrees in Applied Mathematics\, Immunology\, Computational Biology\, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. Her recent research efforts are aimed at descriptive analyses of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) data in efforts to make this data accessible to the public. She is also a prolific science writer\, public speaker and has presented her work internationally at the invitations of parliamentarians and Senators\, alike. She will soon be an employee of MIT. \nAbout the Talk\nKevin will cover the radical mutagenesis that has occurred in bioethics as it pertains to the incarcerated CRISPR baby Scientist to mandated gene therapies that appeared only a few years later. How this deception was perpetrated and what tools we need to fix to ensure it never happens again. \nPart of democratizing medicine requires decentralization of medical research and scientific publishing. The talk will underscore the narrative control induced by centralized scientific funding and peer review and how Bitcoin can break this cycle with censorship resistant funding and publishing. \nJessica will wing a great conversation with Kevin about their new paper’s data. It’s all about DNA contamination/SV40. \nVenue\, Location & Parking\nRocco’s\, 193 Main Street\, Wilmington. Ample free parking. Overflow parking at Dunkin’ Donuts right next door\, or across the street @ Sherwin Williams. \nRegistration\n$50 per person.  Space is limited so be sure to secure your seat early! \nFor more information contact Brianne at BrianneKrupsaw@gmail.com Please include “October Supper Club” in the subject line.\n \n

SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, November 3\, 2025: Indiana University Professor Colin Elliott
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILNovember 3\, 6:30PM – 9:30PM \nWe are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on Monday\, November 3\, featuring Indiana University Professor Colin Elliott. \n“After Charlie Kirk: Ancient Rome’s Lessons on Political Violence and the Death of Republics”\nThe assassination of Charlie Kirk was shocking not only because a man was killed for his political and religious beliefs\, but because of the troubling revelation that many Americans believe such murders as justified and even worthy of celebration. Can anything be done to prevent the United States from entering a dark new period in which open factional violence becomes normalized? The ancient Roman Republic final phase offers stunning insights into how such embedded violence could play out. After the murder of political activist Tiberius Gracchus in 133 BC\, some in Rome—including many senators—endorsed the killing. Despite opportunities to restore political stability\, Rome’s elites failed to act\, and in the decades that followed\, cycles of violence grew increasingly frequent and intense. This chaos gave rise to dictators\, warlords\, and civil wars\, ultimately leading to the permanent collapse of the Roman Republic. \nAbout Professor Elliott:\nColin Elliott is a Professor of History at Indiana University\, Bloomington\, specializing in the Roman Empire’s economic\, social and environmental history. He authored Pox Romana: The Plague that Shook the Roman World (Princeton\, 2024) and Economic Theory and the Roman Monetary Economy (Cambridge\, 2020). His next book\, Tyrant & Gladiator: Commodus\, Last Emperor of the Pax Romana (Princeton University Press)\, is a biography of the Roman Emperor Commodus. Elliott is also host of The Pax Romana Podcast—a podcast exploring the exciting stories and sources from Roman history. He teaches several popular courses at Indiana University\, including ‘Ancient Leaders and Leadership’—a favorite of students of the Kelly School of Business. In 2020\, his teaching earned the David and Cheryl Morley Career Distinguished Teaching Award—the College’s highest teaching honor for early career faculty. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. SUMMARY:Brownstone Supper Club\, West Hartford\, November 19\, 2025: Alex Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILOn Wednesday\, November 19\, the famous West Hartford Supper Club is pleased to welcome Alex Sullivan\, author of She Didn’t Start the Fire: The True Story of One Mother’s Journey from Apolitical to Activist.  \nButterfly is the venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of the Brownstone Institute. Come early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nAlex Sullivan graduated from Duke University with a double major in Mathematics and Theater. She began her career on the commodities sales and trading desk at JPMorgan\, where navigating the shark-infested waters of Wall Street prepared her well for the challenges of the outside world. When the global pandemic struck in 2020\, Alex left her career on Wall Street to become a stay-at-home mother\, taking on a new kind of challenge: protecting children. Since then\, she has devoted herself to educating parents—especially women—on the importance of grassroots activism\, community engagement\, and prioritizing our children as the future of America. \nShe co-founded New Canaan Unplugged\, a parent-led initiative helping families cultivate a more mindful relationship with technology. Alex also serves as the Connecticut Chapter Lead of the Independent Women’s Network (IWN)\, which operates in Fairfield County as a hub for like-minded individuals pushing back against divisive ideologies in schools and local communities. SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, December 8\, 2025: Green Acres Village’s Ann Kreilkamp
DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILDecember 8\, 6:30PM – 9:30PM\nWe are thrilled to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on Monday\, December 8\, featuring Green Acres Village’s Ann Kreilkamp.\n“Growing Communities from the Ground Up: Green Acres Village – A Template for the Transformation of Suburban America” \nAbout the talk:\nAnn Kreilkamp will share the remarkable journey of creating Green Acres Village\, a thriving community nestled in the heart of suburban Bloomington. Ann will walk us through how she conceived and built this unique neighborhood\, where three homes with gardens\, a shared compost area\, greenhouse\, chicken coop\, patio\, and community stage come together as a living laboratory for intentional\, regenerative living. \nAnn calls her approach “emergent design”—a philosophy of making decisions “one after another\, little by little\,” allowing each choice to organically reveal the next step. Ann’s story reveals how these small\, deliberate actions can create transformational change\, build real community and have profound impact not just in our homes and neighborhoods\, but in our individual lives and our relationship with the earth. \nCome ready for inspiration as we discover how tiny steps can bring about slow\, meaningful transformation for ourselves and the soil beneath our feet. \nAbout Ann\nAnn Kreilkamp\, PhD (philosophy\, Boston University\, 1972) made an unexpected turn at age 60\, moving to Bloomington in 2003 from a 20-foot diameter yurt in Jackson Hole\, Wyoming. Having lived both on the east and west coasts but never visited the midwest\, Ann saw Indiana as a “flyover state” and had no interest in living there. But when her late husband decided to attend law school at IU\, she joined him. \nThen\, after only one evening together\, he died of a heart attack while asleep\, leaving her alone in a strange town. \nAnn had to stay. Why? She didn’t know. All she knew was that her husband had left her with a house in an inheritance\, and the question became: how was she to utilize it? \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. For over 30 years\, Lennie’s has been bringing people together over delicious food and drink in a setting perfect for meaningful conversation. \nLocation & Parking\nLennie’s is located at 514 E.
