Since 2005 he has served as Executive Director of the Autism Action Network\, a national\, not-profit\, grassroots advocacy organization that influences legislation and policy on a wide range of issues affecting the autism community. Gilmore began this work following a vaccine injury of his infant son that caused extensive neurological damage later diagnosed as autism. He has collaborated with a wide range of organizations including Children’s Health Defense\, and in 2023 co-founded American Values 2024\, a federal Super PAC that worked to elect Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as President of the United States. He was recently appointed to the US Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. Mr. Gilmore has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Graduate School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. He lives in Long Beach\, NY with his wife\, Jennifer\, and his adult son Luke who is diagnosed with autism. \nProgram description \nJohn will discuss the lack of meaningful development in our knowledge of autism over the past 25 years\, and the loss of a generation of American children as a result. Significant recent changes in the federal health agencies\, however\, hold the promise of new\, and\, hopefully\, productive change. Twenty-five years ago we did not know (officially) the cause or causes of autism. There were no treatments\, no prevention and no cures\, and the brand-new Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM) estimated the autism prevalence rate was 1 in 150 among 8-year-olds. \nToday\, after the expenditure of several billion research dollars\, we do not know (officially) the cause or causes of autism\, there are still no treatments\, no prevention\, and no cures\, and the ADDM now estimates the autism prevalence rate is 1 in 31 among 8-year-olds (but they are not sure if the rate has really gone up). Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently marked a new direction in federal autism policy by replacing every member of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. Gilmore is one of the new appointed members of the committee\, The question is after 25 years of failure\, where are we going to go to answer the many unanswered questions about the leading disabling disorder among American children. \nPlease make plans to join us. However\, HCQIA is now often weaponized through sham peer reviews which silence ethical physicians who challenge profit-driven practices or administrative overreach. The doctors have recently appeared on podcasts\, including DemystifySci and a Substack interview by Jefferey Jaxen\, and are scheduled for the March Chicago Brownstone Institute Supper Club. They will outline the original intent of HCQIA\, how the misapplication of this federal law controls physicians and negatively affects patient care\, in addition to proposed legislative amendments aimed at removing hospital immunity\, restoring due process\, protecting whistleblowers\, and prioritizing patient safety over institutional control. Their insights\, formed by decades of frontline experience in emergency medicine\, emphasize the urgent need to rewrite this flawed legislation and to rebuild trust and integrity in the medical system. \nAbout the Speakers \nDr. Patricia Robitaille is an emergency physician with 35 years of experience in emergency medicine and 20 years of involvement in physician peer review and credentialing. As chairman\, she unified three credentialing committees from four hospitals\, to form a centralized\, system wide Medical Staff Credentialing Committee which was responsible for the evaluation of thousands of physicians. She has extensive experience as an emergency department chairman and head of human resources for her practice group. She has dedicated her clinical career to putting patients first. Having personally witnessed ethically concerning issues in healthcare arising from the corporatization of medicine\, particularly the misapplication of the federal Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986\, she is dedicated to reforming this law. She has sought to educate the public and healthcare professionals about these issues through her Substack and is collaborating on legislative efforts to reform HCQIA. \n  \nDr. Coleen Rickabaugh has 30 years of experience practicing emergency medicine. She served as the recruiter for their department and has been the volunteer medical director for emergency medical services\, directing pre-hospital care in Spotsylvania County Virginia. While her allopathic training had prepared her to treat true emergencies\, she quickly realized that many patients who presented to the emergency department were in desperate need of primary care. Having a holistic slant and a “whole person” philosophy of medicine\, she incorporated that into her practice model\, frequently educating patients about the dangers of over-reliance on pharmaceutical agents and coaching them on issues of immune health\, food as medicine\, and the importance of physical activity. She became increasingly disillusioned by the administrative usurpation of medicine\, the abandonment of ethics\, the substitution of protocol medicine for critical thinking\, and the lack of accessibility to proper care for many patients. These concerns peaked during the Covid pandemic. She became a Covid dissident and formed an underground alliance with one like-minded family practitioner in the community to treat patients early with immune support and assist them in navigating inpatient care with medical autonomy and informed consent. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nWalter Kirn is among the most incisive political\, cultural\, and literary critics in public life today. In the tradition of Mark Twain and H.L Mencken\, he has the broad imagination to think outside prevailing opinion boxes and find the underlying themes. DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILDeBlaze at 131 | 131 E Main St.\, Carnegie\, PA 15106 \nWednesday\, April 22\, 2026 6:30 – 9 pm  \n$50 includes appetizers and dinner \n  \nPittsburgh Brownstone Supper Club is pleased to have Mike Costarell present “COVID‑19 at Youngstown State University: A Faculty Account”. \n  \nIn this talk\, Costarell recounts events at Youngstown State University from March 2020 through February 2022\, including his address to the Academic Senate. Drawing on firsthand experience\, he examines how COVID‑era policies reshaped academic governance\, sidelined disciplinary expertise\, and narrowed the space for debate within a public university. \n  \nThe presentation concludes with twelve questions for higher education to confront as it reckons with emergency powers\, institutional conformity\, and whether universities remain capable of open inquiry under crisis conditions. \n  \nMike Costarell was born in the Youngstown\, Ohio area\, graduating high school in 1985 and then Youngstown State University in 1989 with a degree in civil engineering. \n  \nHe then spent the next 5 1/2 years in the United States Navy nuclear propulsion program\, earning qualification as in engineering watch officer\, submarine officer\, and achieved the nuclear engineer qualification. \n  \nFor the next 10 years he worked as a production supervisor\, process engineer\, and energy management consultant. During that time\, he also completed the requirements for the Ohio professional engineer credential and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. \n  \nHis subsequent 20-year academic career had many dramatic periods\, including DEI hiring processes\, negative promotion experiences\, and a departure from the OEA/NEA union. Fortunately\, that contrarian attitude came in valuable during the 2020 campus discussions on Covid 19. As part of his actions and several others\, YSU was one of only two public institutions to not require a vaccine to work or attend classes. \n  \nHe remains unvaccinated and an unashamed supporter of the Great Barrington Declaration.
