This month we are pleased to welcome Laura Delano. \nAbout Laura Delano\nLaura Delano is a writer\, speaker\, and consultant\, and the founder of Inner Compass Initiative\, a charitable organization that she founded to help people make informed choices about psychiatric diagnoses\, drugs\, and drug withdrawal. She is a leading voice in the international movement to offer patients an alternative to the medicalized\, professionalized mental health industry. \nAbout the Talk\nLaura’s new memoir\, Unshrunk\, recounts her harrowing 14-year relationship to the American mental health industry\, weaving in research into the medications she was prescribed and the history of modern psychiatry. Laura will share some of her story\, how her book has been received by the media and psychiatry\, and what she senses shifting in the public discourse around psychiatric drugs and diagnoses. Test your knowledge when you join us for an engaging and informative evening featuring Andrew Horning\, Advocate for Constitutional Rule of Law. Mr. Horning will tell us how our constitutional design was supposed to work and illuminate those parts that are often poorly understood or even unknown. He’ll speak about how we have screwed up the Constitution and how we can and must fix it. \nAbout Andy Horning:\nAndy Horning is a constitutional advocate\, author\, and retired medical technology developer who has spent three decades fighting for equal ballot access and challenging the corruption of America’s two-party system. A former Indianapolis Star columnist and Adjunct Scholar with the Indiana Policy Review\, Horning won the GOP primary for Indianapolis’s US House seat in 2004 and later ran as a Libertarian candidate for Governor\, US House\, and US Senate. \nOn July 4\, 2007\, Horning led the property tax protest on the Governor’s Mansion lawn that made national news and is credited in at least one book with helping launch the Tea Party movement. He has sued both state and federal governments multiple times in defense of constitutional principles\, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the rule of law. \nBefore retiring in 2022\, Horning worked in medical imaging device development and authored peer-reviewed papers on clinical and technical subjects. A former cartoonist\, he wrote and illustrated a book on stress echocardiography and is the author of “Relighting the Torch” and “The Truth about Excelsior\,” both available on Amazon. \nDespite decades of advocacy yielding mixed results\, Horning maintains high hopes for a future of peace\, prosperity\, justice\, and freedom. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILThe famed supper club at a fabulous venue (the real Chinese stuff) with friends of the Brownstone Institute\, features MIT scientist and biostatistician Dr. Retsef Levi\, who is a leading authority on information systems\, pharmaceutical efficacy and safety\, and a current member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. \nCome early for cocktails and meet Brownstone Institute friends\, scholars\, writers\, and benefactors\, and celebrate victories and discuss challenges ahead. The food is wonderful and the discussion is brilliant. Casual and fun\, even if some people come in fancier clothing. \nThis month we are deeply honored to host Retsef Levi\, a curious and scrupulous scientist with a humane outlook on solutions in these troubled times. He is a member of the Operations Management Group at MIT Sloan and affiliated with the MIT Operations Research Center. Levi also serves as the faculty leader for Food Chain Supply Analytics. Before coming to MIT\, he spent a year in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center as the holder of the Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Tel-Aviv University in 2001\, and a PhD in Operations Research from Cornell University in 2005. \nHe is a member of ACIP\, the committee that provides advice and guidance to leaders of the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This CIP appointment is for four years. \nRetsef will share with us insights on the matter of AI systems. Are they as robust as advertised or are we merely creating single points of failure. Not nearly enough attention has been paid to this concern. Another matter: when AI systems break down\, can anyone fix them? Other issues will come up in Q&A. \nWe are thrilled to hear from him and hear his story of his experiences and what it has taught him about this highly contentious moment in public life.
