She leads a team of litigators and researchers focused on protecting children and the environment from the harms of wireless radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Miriam is an international lawyer with a background in corporate accountability and international human rights law. Throughout her career\, she has worked for various human rights organizations in Europe and the U.S.\, where she focused on mechanisms to hold corporate actors accountable for egregious violations of human rights. DESCRIPTION:SHARE | PRINT | EMAILBrownstone Institute Supper Club\, Pittsboro\, NC \nForest Hall at Chatham Mills \nTuesday\, September 15\, 2026 @ 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM \n$48 includes full meal and non-alcohol drinks\, cash bar available \nWe are pleased to welcome Dr. Jane Hoppin\, international expert on “forever chemicals” like PFAS and the principal investigator on the GenX Exposure Study involving Pittsboro residents. \nAbout the Talk \nWhat are the health consequences of long term PFAS exposure? \nPFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are persistent environmental contaminants (aka forever chemicals) that have historically been found at high levels in drinking water throughout the Cape Fear River Basin\, including Pittsboro. Health risks associated with PFAS include reduced immune response to vaccines\, thyroid disruption\, elevated cholesterol\, pregnancy complications\, and increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers. \n While residents of the Wilmington area have some unique PFAS exposures as a result of chemical manufacturing near Fayetteville\, people throughout the Basin have been impacted by historic and current use of these chemicals in textile and furniture manufacturing\, airports and fire stations\, and land application of biosolids containing PFAS. PFAS levels of Pittsboro residents are higher than the US population. While efforts to reduce PFAS in drinking water have resulted in lower blood levels of these chemicals\, the potential for long term health effects remain. \nThis talk will include an overview of the GenX Exposure Study’s PFAS research in the Cape Fear River Basin\, what we are learning about potential health impacts\, and how people can engage with their health care providers about this issue. Jane will also discuss emerging issues around PFAS including ultrashort chain chemicals. This talk hits very close to home and is an exceptional opportunity to understand the threats to our water supply\, what can be done to protect our health and to ask nuanced questions to a local expert.   \nAbout the Speaker  \nJane Hoppin\, ScD\, is a professor of environmental epidemiology at NC State University whose work focuses on understanding the impact of chemical exposures on communities. Historically\, her work has focused on environmental and occupational pesticide exposure in both the US and in Costa Rica. Since 2017\, she has been the Principal Investigator of the GenX Exposure Study\, a prospective study investigating the impact of PFAS chemicals in communities throughout the Cape Fear River Basin\, including Pittsboro. Through this work\, she interacts with community members\, community organizations focusing on environmental issues\, and local and state health departments. \n In 2022\, in recognition of this work\, she received the Governor James E. Since then\, there has been exponential growth of the wireless industry driven by billions of dollars of lobbying throughout the states and in Washington D.C. Despite the accumulation of a large amount of scientific evidence about the hazards of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and a successful 2021 lawsuit requiring the FCC and FDA to update their safety standards\, these warnings have been ignored in the rush to compete with China in the development of 5G\, AI and data centers. \nThe 5% of the population with severe electrohypersensitivity\, recently renamed electromagnetic radiation syndrome\, are the canaries in our coal mine signaling by their distressing physical symptoms such as insomnia\, cardiac palpitations\, headaches\, rashes\, and brain fog\, that there is cause for concern for the rest of us who may not sense the danger. This talk will address methods to assess the EMF exposure in your house\, simple actions you can take to decrease it\, and if necessary\, ways to shield against it. There are also opportunities for proactive ordinances in local communities to regulate the siting of future transmitters. In a world of wifi everywhere\, Larry will have many insights to share to help protect our well-being.  \nAbout the Speaker \nLarry Burk\, MD\, CEHP\, is a retired Duke associate professor of radiology and MRI expert who now works as an online health coach. He was one of the pioneering researchers in MRI of the knee and shoulder in the 1980s. His interest in EMF hazards began when he joined the Society for MRI Safety Committee and the Bioelectromagnetic Society. Initially the concerns centered around radar and power lines\, but were rapidly superseded by the expansion of wireless technology. He has experience lobbying the legislature in Raleigh regarding smart meters and 5G without success due to overwhelming industry funding for lobbyists. \nDr. Burk was a member of the Non-Ionizing Advisory Committee for the NC Radiation Protection Commission for 5 years and was instrumental in revising the official government website to accurately represent the EMF hazards. This month we are pleased to welcome Brownstone Institute Senior Scholar Gigi Foster\, now on sabbatical in the US. \nAbout Gigi Foster \nGigi Foster works in diverse fields including education\, social influence\, time use\, lab experiments\, behavioural economics\, and Australian policy. Named 2019 Young Economist of the Year by the Economic Society of Australia\, she publishes in both specialised and cross-disciplinary outlets\, and her innovative teaching was awarded a 2017 Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. She has filled numerous roles of service to the profession and engages heavily on economic matters with the Australian community\, as one of Australia’s leading economics communicators\, in the media and at live events. She co-founded the think tank Australians for Science and Freedom in 2023\, and is an author of dozens of academic articles and several books\, including The Great Covid Panic (2021) and Do Lockdowns and Border Closures Serve the “Greater Good”? (2022). \nAbout the Talk \nThe ethics\, politics and economics of Western renewal. The modern West is in decline\, as evidenced in our institutions\, our culture\, and the betrayal of our people by elites who disregard the needs of a healthy society in favour of serving power. What to do? In this Brownstone Supper Club talk\, I will describe my approach to this uber-problem as an economist trained in the broad social sciences\, from both a theoretical and a highly practical standpoint\, focussing on desirable and feasible options for institutional redesign. Amongst other things I will discuss the mission and activities of the free think tank I co-founded and co-direct\, Australians for Science and Freedom\, and the newest attempt at Western renewal in which I am involved: a serious proposal for the secession of Western Australia from that country’s Commonwealth government. I will also briefly discuss the origin of Brownstone Institute’s first published book\, The Great Covid Panic\, released in September 2021\, which I co-authored with Paul Frijters and Michael Baker. \nVenue\, Location & Parking \nRocco’s\, 193 Main Street\, Wilmington.
