SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, December 8\, 2025: Green Acres Village’s Ann Kreilkamp
DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 6:30PM – 9:30PM\nWe are thrilled to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on Monday\, December 8\, featuring Green Acres Village’s Ann Kreilkamp.\n“Growing Communities from the Ground Up: Green Acres Village – A Template for the Transformation of Suburban America” \nAbout the talk:\nAnn Kreilkamp will share the remarkable journey of creating Green Acres Village\, a thriving community nestled in the heart of suburban Bloomington. Ann will walk us through how she conceived and built this unique neighborhood\, where three homes with gardens\, a shared compost area\, greenhouse\, chicken coop\, patio\, and community stage come together as a living laboratory for intentional\, regenerative living. \nAnn calls her approach “emergent design”—a philosophy of making decisions “one after another\, little by little\,” allowing each choice to organically reveal the next step. Ann’s story reveals how these small\, deliberate actions can create transformational change\, build real community and have profound impact not just in our homes and neighborhoods\, but in our individual lives and our relationship with the earth. \nCome ready for inspiration as we discover how tiny steps can bring about slow\, meaningful transformation for ourselves and the soil beneath our feet. \nAbout Ann\nAnn Kreilkamp\, PhD (philosophy\, Boston University\, 1972) made an unexpected turn at age 60\, moving to Bloomington in 2003 from a 20-foot diameter yurt in Jackson Hole\, Wyoming. Having lived both on the east and west coasts but never visited the midwest\, Ann saw Indiana as a “flyover state” and had no interest in living there. But when her late husband decided to attend law school at IU\, she joined him. \nThen\, after only one evening together\, he died of a heart attack while asleep\, leaving her alone in a strange town. \nAnn had to stay. Why? She didn’t know. All she knew was that her husband had left her with a house in an inheritance\, and the question became: how was she to utilize it? \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, November 3\, 2025: Indiana University Professor Colin Elliott
DESCRIPTION:November 3\, 6:30PM – 9:30PM \nWe are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on Monday\, November 3\, featuring Indiana University Professor Colin Elliott. \n“After Charlie Kirk: Ancient Rome’s Lessons on Political Violence and the Death of Republics”\nThe assassination of Charlie Kirk was shocking not only because a man was killed for his political and religious beliefs\, but because of the troubling revelation that many Americans believe such murders as justified and even worthy of celebration. Can anything be done to prevent the United States from entering a dark new period in which open factional violence becomes normalized? The ancient Roman Republic final phase offers stunning insights into how such embedded violence could play out. After the murder of political activist Tiberius Gracchus in 133 BC\, some in Rome—including many senators—endorsed the killing. Despite opportunities to restore political stability\, Rome’s elites failed to act\, and in the decades that followed\, cycles of violence grew increasingly frequent and intense. This chaos gave rise to dictators\, warlords\, and civil wars\, ultimately leading to the permanent collapse of the Roman Republic. \nAbout Professor Elliott:\nColin Elliott is a Professor of History at Indiana University\, Bloomington\, specializing in the Roman Empire’s economic\, social and environmental history. He authored Pox Romana: The Plague that Shook the Roman World (Princeton\, 2024) and Economic Theory and the Roman Monetary Economy (Cambridge\, 2020). His next book\, Tyrant & Gladiator: Commodus\, Last Emperor of the Pax Romana (Princeton University Press)\, is a biography of the Roman Emperor Commodus. Elliott is also host of The Pax Romana Podcast—a podcast exploring the exciting stories and sources from Roman history. He teaches several popular courses at Indiana University\, including ‘Ancient Leaders and Leadership’—a favorite of students of the Kelly School of Business. In 2020\, his teaching earned the David and Cheryl Morley Career Distinguished Teaching Award—the College’s highest teaching honor for early career faculty. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. For over 30 years\, Lennie’s has been bringing people together over delicious food and drink in a setting perfect for meaningful conversation. \nLocation & Parking\nLennie’s is located at 514 E. SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club April 14 with Dr. Steven Templeton
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Brownstone Midwest Supper Club on April 14\, 2025\, featuring Dr. Steven Templeton\, author of “Fear of a Microbial Planet: How a Germophobic Safety Culture Makes Us Less Safe.” \nAbout Dr. Templeton: \nDr. Templeton is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine – Terre Haute. His research focuses on immune responses to opportunistic fungal pathogens. He has also served on Gov. He will discuss how the pandemic amplified existing germophobic tendencies in society\, leading to interventions that disrupted the natural relationship between our immune systems and the microbial world. Dr. Templeton will offer insights into how we can develop more balanced and effective approaches to public health challenges without the devastating social\, economic\, and psychological costs of germaphobia-driven overreach. \nJoin us for an evening of stimulating conversation\, delicious food\, and community connection as we explore these vital ideas together. \nVenue & Details\nLennie’s is a beloved Bloomington institution known for its warm atmosphere\, exceptional cuisine\, and craft beer selection. SUMMARY:Brownstone Midwest Supper Club\, March 10\, with Larry Howard of Maple Valley Farm
DESCRIPTION:Reviving the Indiana Food Freedom Act and Building a National Patronage Network for Regenerative Agriculture \nThe future of America’s food system hinges on our ability to empower small farmers and defend the right of consumers to choose what they eat. Larry’s presentation will explore two revolutionary initiatives aimed at transforming the way we grow\, distribute\, and access food. \nFirst\, we’ll revisit the Indiana Food Freedom Act\, a visionary piece of legislation that would protect Hoosiers’ right to obtain and contract for food without unnecessary government oversight. This law represents a bold stand against regulatory overreach\, ensuring that farmers and consumers can engage in direct\, informed transactions based on trust and transparency. \nNext\, Larry will introduce the Thriving Farms Initiative\, a national effort to build a patronage network that directly supports regenerative farms. By providing cash gifts to farmers and their families\, this initiative aims to catalyze the rapid growth of local\, sustainable food systems. This bold approach not only accelerates the adoption of regenerative practices but also creates a model for community-supported agriculture that can be replicated nationwide. \nAbout Larry Howard: \nLarry Howard is a husband\, homeschool dad\, and lifelong advocate for food freedom and regenerative agriculture. With over 20 years of experience as a regenerative livestock farmer at Maple Valley Farm in Bloomington\, Indiana he and his family raise cattle\, sheep\, pigs\, meat chickens\, laying hens\, turkeys\, and ducks\, fostering a model of farming that prioritizes animal welfare\, environmental stewardship\, and sustainable food systems. \nLarry has been a Weston A. Price chapter leader since 2005\, advocating for raw milk and traditional foods\, and has testified before legislators and debated with policymakers to protect Hoosiers’ right to access the foods of their choice. He drafted the Indiana Food Freedom Act\, groundbreaking legislation to ensure informed individuals can freely contract with farmers and food producers without burdensome government regulation. \nIn 2012\, he founded an innovative private ownership-based partnership that revitalized his family farm’s operations. His efforts have been highlighted in emergency trips to the statehouse with his children—who have written speeches en route—and in presentations to organizations like the Indiana Environmental Health Association. \nToday\, he is spearheading the Thriving Farms Initiative\, a national patronage network designed to provide direct financial support to regenerative farms\, fueling a grassroots revival of sustainable agriculture and food freedom across the country.
