Please join us for the Pacific Northwest’s Brownstone Supper Club! It will be an opportunity to build community and lasting relationships while engaging in an interesting conversation about the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of a local epidemiologist at the University of Washington.
About the Speaker
Janet Baseman, PhD, MPH is a Professor of Epidemiology and the Associate Dean for the Public Health Practice at the University of Washington’s (UW) School of Public Health. Her research is in the areas of infectious disease surveillance, public health informatics, and emergency preparedness and response systems. She teaches Field Epidemiology to graduate students and directs UW’s student outbreak response team. Prior to joining the UW faculty, she spent several years at a local public health agency doing boots on the ground public health work.
About the Talk
The University of Washington – and our surrounding communities – were “ground zero” for the COVID-19 pandemic’s entrance into the United States. Dr. Baseman will share what was really going on behind the scenes – including what was known at the time, how that understanding changed, and how those shifts influenced public health guidance and policy decisions.
We will also discuss the real impacts and tradeoffs these decisions had for individuals and communities, reflect on where communication fell short, and consider what it will take to rebuild the public’s trust moving forward.
We hope you can join us!
