Logical sequencing, the ability to hold a chain of evidence from premise to conclusion, is treated as optional. Into that vacancy rush political slogans, institutional jargon, school scripts, and coercive propaganda that do not survive five minutes of honest questioning.

On Tuesday, September 29, the Charlotte Brownstone Supper Club welcomes Dr. Sheila Furey, a Richmond child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who has spent more than twenty-six years in the room with the children produced by those systems, and who has spent the last several years teaching brains how to work again.

Can You Still Teach a Child to Think?

What schools and screens have done to attention, working memory, and logical sequencing, and why a generation that cannot hold a chain of evidence is easy to capture by slogans.

Dr. Furey will speak as a clinician, not a commentator. She will describe what she sees when a child’s mind cannot keep a sequence, cannot weigh competing claims, and cannot sit still long enough to test a story against reality. She will connect that cognitive collapse to classrooms that reward feeling over analysis, to devices that train the brain for interruption, and to professional cultures that replaced differential diagnosis with affirmation.

This is not a lament about “kids these days.” It is a practical argument: the capacity to think is biological, trainable, and being systematically neglected. A mind that cannot hold evidence will outsource judgment to whoever speaks with the most confidence. That is how mandates, identity scripts, and one-size-fits-all protocols move through a population that still believes it is thinking for itself.

She will also talk about what can be rebuilt. She has spent years using neuroplasticity-based cognitive work, strengthening processing, memory, reasoning, and executive function, so children and adults can do the one thing institutions now discourage: follow a line of evidence to the end.

About Dr. Sheila Furey

Dr. Sheila Furey is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who has practiced in the Richmond area for more than twenty-six years. Her passion for serving children led her to teach brain exercises that help children and adults overcome learning disabilities, work that is changing lives by treating the organ of thought rather than merely managing its symptoms.

In 2022 she founded the Virginia Medical Freedom Alliance, a coalition of healthcare professionals and citizens who first came together to educate the public about early treatment for Covid-19 and the safety questions surrounding the shots. That mission has widened: protecting informed consent, bodily sovereignty, and the doctor-patient relationship at every stage of development.

Born in Carroll, Iowa, she attended Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha and completed her residency and child psychiatry fellowship at Boston University Hospitals. She has worked in outpatient and inpatient settings, residential treatment, and the juvenile justice system, and has testified as an expert witness. She has been married for 32 years to her husband Dennis. They have two adult daughters.

Brownstone first welcomed her in North Carolina earlier this year. Charlotte gets the talk that asks the harder question underneath the policy fights: if the child’s mind cannot think, no slogan about freedom will hold.
