About the Talk
Dr. Shipp will discuss the mission of Seven Oaks Classical School and explain the importance of the school’s work through the lens of Alexis de Tocqueville. Tocqueville’s nineteenth century classic, Democracy in America, has been described as “the best ever written on democracy and the best ever written on America.” Dr. Shipp will consider what Tocqueville has to say about freedom and tyranny in democratic societies, and what this means for local institutions, such as schools.

About the Speaker
Dr. Stephen Shipp serves as the founding headmaster of Seven Oaks Classical School, a public charter school in Ellettsville, IN, that he has led since 2016. Before he joined the Seven Oaks team, he worked in various classical schools, first as a teacher and then as an administrator.
After discovering classical education as an undergraduate student at Patrick Henry College, he earned an M.Litt. in Ancient History from the University of St Andrews and a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Dallas. He has received academic fellowships from the Earhart Foundation, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, and The Claremont Institute, and has presented in the fields of history, literature, education, and politics. Dr. Shipp is a teacher who has taught students at every level, ranging from the first grade to undergraduates in college. He is also a family man. His wife is a native Hoosier, and they have been blessed with six children, five of whom attend Seven Oaks and one of whom is currently a sophomore at Hillsdale College.
