As the TikTok debate highlights, it’s evident in the Information Age that no one is more capable at framing and shaping events and ideas from a particular point of view or set of values than the large tech companies. Which Way, Africa?

Which Way, Africa?

SHARE | PRINT | EMAIL

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Western imperialism dispossessed the peoples of Africa of huge tracts of land through treaties that it made them sign under duress or deception. For example, the Anglo-Maasai treaties of 1904 and 1911 obligated the Maasai to relocate to reserves in Laikipia and Loita plains. In this way, the British colonisers moved the Maasai away from their own ancestral lands for exclusive occupation by European settlers. We the peoples of Africa must now guard our health sovereignty with all that we have against recolonisation by demanding that no international legal instrument violates our right to sovereignty in its multiple dimensions, public health included.

Anyone who is alert to our past should have noticed the ire with which the stronger have striven to silence and extinguish the weaker. It should remind us of those historical conflicts in which the party that was more powerful in number, status, and force and thus passed as righteous would later turn out to be tremendously disastrous.

Before Preparing for Pandemics, We Need Better Evidence of Risk

SHARE | PRINT | EMAIL

There should be time, and urgency, to fix this evidence gap. Not because the next pandemic is just around the corner, but because the costs of getting things wrong will have long-term implications that may be far harder to address once wholesale changes are initiated. As a result, what is prudent is to give the evidence pause for thought, to identify the knowledge gaps, address them, and to pursue better evidence-based policy.

Javier Milei's Battle Cry for the People

Javier Milei’s Battle Cry for the People

SHARE | PRINT | EMAIL

Dr. Milei is basically an intellectual academic who became a truth warrior in response to the damage he saw being done to his country by a parasitic administrative state. In other words, he is yet another intellectual critic who is mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.
