Mechanisms of Harm: Introduction

[The following is the Introduction to Lori Weintz’s book, Mechanisms of Harm: Medicine in the Time of Covid-19.]

No one has the full story or complete knowledge about the Covid-19 pandemic and our response, but we should be able to examine what happened and ask questions. This compilation is an attempt to analyze our pandemic response with a critical eye.

This report is not a medical study or conclusive document. It presents various ideas and concerns shared by so-called “Covid dissidents” who, from the beginning, were concerned that our pandemic response was causing more harm than Covid-19 itself. No doubt there are other relevant points, and points of view, that are missing from this collection, but it’s a start. My hope is that this book will lead to thoughtful consideration, fruitful conversations, and the pursuit of additional knowledge.

Perhaps the most important thing to note in a discussion of medicine in the time of Covid-19 is this: If there had been effective treatments for Covid-19 using already FDA-approved medicines (which there were), there would not have been a need, or a legal basis, for the approval of emergency use medicines and vaccines.

If someone had hurt your family and friends in an underhanded manner, and had the capacity and intent of doing it again, would you want to know? Maybe you could prevent future harm if you were aware of how and why they did it in the first place.

On May 11, 2023, the Covid pandemic emergency officially ended in the U.S. My concern, and the impetus for this report, is the belief that the Covid-19 pandemic response was a dress rehearsal. So much was accomplished during the pandemic by those who embrace authoritarianism under the guise of safety and protecting society. Emboldened, they will try to force us all into a repeat, as soon as they can stir up the next fear – another variant or a new pathogen, climate change, compromised food supply, energy shortage, international unrest – any “emergency” will do.

You may, or may not, believe that the Covid-19 pandemic merited the response we gave. Either way, consideration should be given to what we were forced to do, and what was lost over the past four years – all under the banner of fighting a virus.

The following compilation of topics is an effort to explain the How and Why of Medical Harms during the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on four main aspects:

1) The suppression of early effective treatments for Covid-19

2) Remdesivir and other profitable, but ineffective, Covid-19 treatments

3) The development and implementation of the Covid-19 vaccines

4) How Covid-19 was used to impose stringent, anti-democratic measures

These four aspects will be addressed, not in any certain order, but throughout this book. Details relating to medical and scientific expertise are linked to original source material such as studies, reports, and the writings and statements of licensed professionals.

A Medical Terms Glossary (Layperson’s Version) is located at the end of the book.
